In the United States, a teacher was fired after showing the statue of David, made by Michelangelo, to her 11- and 12-year-old students. This decision caused a great reaction in Florence, Italy, where the famous statue is on display.
It is an icon of the Renaissance. A David, in the simplest form, sculpted by Michelangelo. However, would it be too bare for some Americans? In a school in Florida, a republican state in the United States, a teacher was forced to resign for showing a photo of the statue to her eleven-year-old students. Some would have felt uncomfortable. Three parents complained. “The problem is that the parents were not informed in advance. For a delicate subject like (this one), they should have been informed, as we usually do”assures Barney Bishop, the president of the school council.
“Distinguishing nudity from pornography”
In Florence, in the Accademia gallery, the controversy seems to shock tourists, even Anglo-Saxons. “This statue is part of our history. I don’t understand how anyone can say it’s pornography”, says a young woman. A complete man “I’m so sorry for the kids who couldn’t see it.” Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Academy Museum, believes that it “we must distinguish nudity from pornography”. Already in the 16th century, David’s nudity caused a scandal.
